Polar Explorer Eric Larsen
Day 5. In the Flattops

After an incredible day of riding yesterday, we covered 95 miles and eventually made it to the end of Stillwater reservoir, a 17-mile uphill ride from Yampa that we finished, once again, in the dark.

It was a huge relief to be done with the first leg of our Coloradathon adventure even if we did come in a bit behind schedule.

This morning, we traded our Trek Bikes for Granite Gear back packs and started off on a roughly 65-mile journey through the 'Flattops'. We were immediately impressed. The mountains formed a ring of towering plateau-like features as we hiked up and over and through. We kept a steady pace stopping every so often to take pictures and film. For the middle of the day, we hiked through a huge burn. The wind whistled eerily across dead tree branches that were still standing.

It's been a hard balance trying to make miles and simultaneously capture the scenes and film for documentary; however Ben has been taking the lion's share of the burden setting up a variety of incredible shots. Our hope is to capture the essence of Colorado as well as daily goings on our adventure.

I'm not going to lie, much of the trip has been a fairly difficult grind and we've been playing catch up with our miles since Day 1. Still, the scenery has been amazing and we have got to see Colorado in so many different moods.

We did encounter wide patches of snow on the North-facing slopes today but there has been enough foot traffic on the trails that we weren't doing too much post hiking. We've gotten super lucky with the weather and today I hiked in just shorts and a Helly Hansen base layer top.

It is fun to be out here although it is equally challenging physically. I have been battling a very bad flu and it is wearing me down a bit. Generally, there is one low point in the day where I question my ability to push through, but this is not the first time I've felt that. While we are constantly heading into unknown terrain the familiar expedition feelings are always with me. This is my life and the Coloradathon is an extension of my overall adventure philosophy. Have fun and do good.
